* TSHIRT STOCK CLEAROUT - JUST IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS
This is a great opportunity to grab some Waifs memorabilia, given the band's lower profile this year, and the fact that they will not be touring Australia this summer, as many fans have come to expect.

We've gathered up all the Tshirts that have been floating around the country since the Aussie tour wound up a earlier this year, and we’d love to offload them. If you have a 4 year old, there’s even some tees for you.   Stocks are limited, apart from the Grey "17 Years and Still Cruizin'" (Mens Medium or Womens Large) so it's first come, first served.

We offer you the opportunity to purchase this remaining stock at Cost Price - $15 each. (Kids $12)

Another stocking filler is the "Live from Union of the Soul" album, released earlier this year.  Also featuring John Butler and Clare Bowditch, this live album was not widely advertised, sold mostly at gigs and not readily available from your record store.

Check out our great back catalogue, and our Multi-Score Music Books, and take this opportunity to fill those gaps in your Waifs collection before production of the back catalogue ceases.

Just go to our STORE, download the Order Form and send it in.  We’d love to hear from you.

* ARIA AWARD NOMINATION
For the 7th time since 2002, THE WAIFS have once again been nominated for an Aria Award, this year in the Best Blues and Roots Album category, with their latest album  LIVE FROM THE UNION OF THE SOUL. The 23rd Annual Awards will be held on Thursday 26th November at Acer Arena, Sydney. Good luck to all nominees.

* Donna on Spicks and Specks

Donna Simpson will be appearing this Wednesday on ABC TV Spicks and Specks
(29th July 2009).

* The Waifs - Nominated for 2 APRA Awards

The Waifs are excited to have have had both 'Stay' and 'SunDirtWater' nominated in the 'Blues & Roots Work of the Year' category at the 2009 APRA awards.

For over twenty-five years, the APRA Music Awards have given songwriters and publishers that have achieved outstanding success in their fields across 12 categories, the chance to be honoured before their peers.

Nominations and winners in each category are chosen either by the voting members of APRA (in excess of 30,000 eligible voters), members of the APRA Board or APRA based statistical analysis.

The 2009 APRA Music Awards will be on Tuesday 23rd June 2009 at Peninsula in Melbourne

* TSHIRT SALE
The box of Tshirts that have been floating around the country since the Aussie tour wound up a couple of months ago, has FINALLY made it’s way to our office, and we’d love to offload them. If you have a 4 year old, there’s even some tees for you.   Stocks are limited, so be quick if you want to grab this great design – “17 years and Still Cruizin”.

Yes, it’s 17 years since Donna and Vikki headed north from Albany Western Australia in a little old campervan, 6 months before they met Josh on Cable Beach in Broome.

We’ve already discounted them from show price, now we have the CLEARANCE PRICE of $20 each. (Kids $15)

Check out our great back catalogue, and our Multi-Score Music Books, and take this opportunity to fill those gaps in your Waifs collection before production of the back catalogue ceases.

* AUSTRALIAN TOUR WINDUP

Hi,

It's  been a while since I put anything up here. We seem to have fallen out of step with the cyber world. Ironic, as it was the emergence of the web that helped start our career and kept our audience in touch with the early music.     Who remembers our  pre-web hand written mailouts?

Anyway my apologies for this belated blog.  I can not keep up with the discussion boards, my space, Face Book etc..  I have children to raise, soil to till, songs to write.

We recently completed an Australian summer tour.  It was something of an epiphany for me personally and I hope  those who came along felt they got some joy out of it. We did.

With the recent tragic events in Victoria, the loss of a family friend, working away from my young family,  I sometimes  question the importance or significance of doing what we do.  The enormous amount of resources and energy consumed to bring 2 hours of live music together seems to outweigh any financial, creative or social benefits a performance may achieve. This has been my thoughts in the past.

On this tour however, I have been so moved by our audience’s  generosity in sharing their stories.  Reminding me that music can be powerful or at the least offer some respite in tough times.  A young boy getting through cancer treatment, a soldier in Afghanistan witnessing the "best and worst of humanity", a teenage girl struggling, a family attending a show while their house burnt down.  All these stories have had a dramatic affect on my performance and brought a new perspective to some of our songs. I didn't expect that.

I like to think we are part of a collective consciousness and because people have reached out and shared their experiences, I have been able to reconcile some of my own feelings of doubt and allowed myself to consider that when you play music to thousands of people who smile back at you and sing along that maybe, all together, we have created some joy  to be released into the atmosphere with all that co2.  That’s gotta be worth it.

Muchas Gracias  to band, crew, and office folk who work their bums off to get the show on the road.  Phil, Bailey, Mat, Brent, Kait, Pattie, Kate, and Kester -  we appreciate you.

I got all teary and reflective at the Port Fairy Folk Festival after being presented with the  New Maton guitar for the "Artists of the Year" award.  Port Fairy was one of the first festivals we played and the organisers have been supporting the band since the early days. I urge anyone that is yet to attend a folk festival to go along and experience something truly valuable. Cultural, musical diversity. I got my musical education at folk festivals. And every time I attend one I find something that blows my mind. Music and performances that you’re not going to hear on radio or on television.To the people of Port Fairy Folk Fest -  It was an honor, thank you..

Our new  "Live at the Union of Soul "  is pretty good. Features a song with John Butler and Claire Bowditch. Check it out. It’s also available for download from various sites.

Thanks also to the people who attended the Adelaide and NSW shows. $!0,000 of ticket sales is being donated to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal.

So what’s next?   Are they breaking up?   Is Vikki going solo? Will the rest of the band go with her and keep calling themselves The Waifs?
 We  have plans to meet later in the year to play jam eat hang out write....   to eat write jam play hangout  -  that sort of thing.

Bye for now.Vikki Waif

These songs were recorded on the road during last years memorable and historic Australian Union Of Soul  tour and feature guest appearances with John Butler  and Clare Bowditch.  There are new songs in acoustic mode, classic covers such as Frank Ifield's  "I Remember You", and Paul Kelly and Kev Carmody's  "From Little things", as well  as a barn storming version of "When I Die"  and of course  there is plenty of Waif's banter in between!

The track listing is;

1) How Many Miles

2) London Still (Acoustic)

3) SunDirtWater

4) Downroads

5) When I Die (Bluegrass)

6) Rescue

7) Stay (Acoustic)

10) I Remember You (with Clare Bowditch)

11) Feeling Sentimental

12) Sweetest Dream

13) Eternity

14) Pony

We hope you enjoy...

* USA Tour Update

Summer time time time. It seems never ending as we follow the sun round the hemispheres. We have spent the better part of the last 6 years sunning ourselves at music festivals the world over. Not a bad life.

We're Driving through Colorado this past week longing to hike off into some mountain meadow to pass a day. But soundcheck or an airport is always waiting. We caught up with Missy Higgins at the Lyons folk fest. She and band were firing.

Our boys are all on this tour making for early mornings and belly laughs.

Off to California, now and then the tour routing gets crazy. It looks like we forgot a gig in Colorado and couldn't decide to go north or south in california. North won.

Got a gig opening for Lucinda Williams and the Avett brothers in Oregon which was worth driving 7 hours for.

Musically we are ready to write again. There are plans to release live recordings of the Union of the Soul tour and get some down loads on the site.

Thanks for coming a long to the shows and allowing us to do what we love.

And we are stoked to be touring Australia in January Feb, March.

See you there.

* Tour Newsletter

Hey all

We had fun touring the United States. Seattle was a highlight, and MerleFest as always.  We loved our Nashville show. 160 people showed up and only about 20 from Nashville. Most had driven in from surrounding states, including Floriday, Texas, Chicago. It was touching. I hope you all got home safely.

We
 had a night of sublime tunage with the time jumpers at the station and then danced to Rosie Flores set at the Basement with Lucinda Williams making a guest appearance. Not bad for a Monday night . Our bassplayer, Ben, now wants to move there. That would put the whole band in northern hemi.

Australia are you losing your hold over your own children?
Never, my beautiful Isle. You hold my heart close to your shoreline always. Time flies when you have babies.

We've had some wonderful openers on this tour. Always a pleasure to discover new music.  Special thanks to Tony Scherr for bringing Bonnie Rait to the show in San Francisco. There's nothing like having a legend side of stage to lift your game!

It is a crazy life. I was sleeping in, after arriving in Édinburgh from Salt Lake City.  I got to visit my family for 3 days. In the last 5 months I've been a part time mother and a full time touring musician. People always ask me "how does it work, mothering and touring?"
Well, it doesn't, really.

Anyway I was in the hotel thinking "I am in Scotland. I should leave this room and actually go into Scotland". But it was raining so I stayed in and read a book. It is crazy that we travel all these miles to arrive in another country and I step out only to play another gig and eat some dinner. And that's my whole experience because the next day you move to the next place and do it again. Dave has the right idea. He tours with a bike.

We had a really fun gig in Edinburgh. A foggy day driving through the country, (we were most impressed by the all organic and local produce travel stops) down to Manchester where the club was intimate. It was like playing in the old days when all the clubs were too small, standing room only and every person sang along. At soundcheck we rehearsed about every song we never play from the old albums and rediscovered a bit of ourselves. I hope we include one or two in future shows.

A day off saw me once again recovering in a hotel room as our hotel was overrun with Scottish football fans, who chanted and paraded outside my room all night. There's something about groups of men chanting and waving flags that scares the hell out of me. Over to Ireland next where we have a night off and I'm hoping to get a lesson on my concertina which I canna fer da life o me werk oot.

Then all roads lead to London for the grand finale. Sold out. Please save all coloquial chants for the walkabout pub next door where they encourage it. It conjures up all my fears of flag waving groups of men and I forget the words to my songs.

We are truly enjoying playing music more than ever. The band is tight and we are getting new songs together. August is filling up with shows and we are talking about getting into the studio again. Big thanks to JB (aka Jason brown) pulling great sound night after night.  And Matt Handley our tec ever patient with set changes. And Bailey TM...TOP SHOW that's how you do it.

Got a decent tour coming together in August in the US. And no plans as yet to head to Australia. It will only take a few weeks of northern winter before we'll hop a plane like you never.

There is some talk about digging out the unreleased tracks from our last recording session. So keep an ear out but you didn't hear that from me.

Lastly a footnote of advice to our younger listeners. (seeing I'm nearing 35 I've now sufficient life experience to espouse my views on this and that) TV is poison. Take youselves down to a folk festival and join a clog dancing workshop. That's where it's at dude.

Seeya there

* The Waifs Wrap Up 2007

After a two year break, international touring artists The Waifs returned to the local spotlight for an amazing year back behind the mics.

Their current record Sun Dirt Water rocketed into the ARIA charts at # 2 week of release and every show they played sold out, reigniting the fires that burn within Aussies for their favourite folk rockers.

It has been an amazing return to the local stage, which started with a national sold out arena tour supporting Keith Urban and flowing through to a sold out national tour of their own, magazine covers, rave reviews and talked about appearances on Enough Rope with Andrew Denton (ABC) and another hit ABC series, The Chaser.

Vikki Thorn also clocked up another song writing gong, taking out the WAM Award for Song Of The Year, for her hit single Sun Dirt Water.

After performances at The Woodford Folk Festival, The Falls Festival’s in TAS and VIC and the Southbound Festival in WA, the band joined label mate John Butler on a national tour in January, with special guests Clare Bowditch and The Feeding Set, for a number of spectacular outdoor events in the Union Of Souls Tour.

A series of intimate up close, bare bones concert versions of the Union Of Soul were performed in  Sydney , Melbourne and Brisbane in February.

This was the last chance for fans to see the band before they return to the USA in March 2008 to tour and release Sun Dirt Water.

To see the Simpson sisters on stage – Donna urging on the music with tambourine in hand, Vikki pouring out her soul through her harmonica – was truly a gift. The sublime guitar of Josh Cunningham, standing in between his two long-time band mates, stood testament to the strong musical influences gained from a blues-based trip. This was a Waifs gig that was truly unforgettable – one of the best shows I’ve seen in a long time – and proof that the trio is at a creative peak.” Sun Herald

* Lots of News for Y'all !
Lots of News for Y'all!

Donna and Vikki in particular have had their share in front of TV camera's recently, with both girls being interview by Andrew Denton on "Enough Rope" back in August, followed up by the experience of a 4.30am lobby call to get to the Channel 9 studios for two live performances and interview with Richard Wilkins on the "Today" morning show last month. And of course, the ARIAs last week when Donna and Vikki had the pleasure of presenting "Best Independent Release" to good friend, John Butler. Congratulations John for both awards.

. . Finally, The Waifs would like to thank all those fans and friends who have supported the band during their recent 7 week tour of the country. Many of you, particularly in regional areas, have been incredibly patient and supportive during the bands extended break, allowing Donna and Vikki to spend time with their young boys. They would also like to thank all those who travelled this long road tour with them, assisted in so many ways, and made the trip so much easier for everyone, as well as doing a fantastic job in their chosen field -
Dave (Drums), Ben (Bass), Mikel (Keyboard), Emma (TM), Tim (FOH), Matt H (Tech), Phil and Kate (Lighting), Norma and Mat (PA), and Craig (Merch). If you missed out on TShirts during the tour, you can buy mens, womens, and childrens tees direct from Out With The New Online Store .

Until next time The Waifs Donna, Vikki, Josh
