pony
the sky was grey and the sea was green
and you’re eyes were a colour that had never
been seen
i got lost somewhere, out in between
where i was and where you wanted me to be
gonna get on my pony and ride
gonna get on my high horse and fly
gonna get on my pony and ride
gonna get on my high horse and fly
the stars came out and the sun went down
and the night got dark it was all around
i got lost somewhere, never to be found
somewhere out on the wild and rolling sea
gonna get on my pony and ride
gonna get on my high horse and fly
gonna get on my pony and ride
gonna get on my high horse and fly

sundirtwater
would you trade me for all the pretty girls
all the ones who came before
who left you broken hearted
with your back up against the wall
would you cash in all your high times
for some lasting company
or a warm soft breast for you to lay your head on
for all of eternity
if you’re holding out for something
just reach and we’ll rise above
give me sun, give me dirt, give me water
give me sweet everlasting love
would you travel right across the world
to meet a woman that you didn’t know
if you thought that she might be the one
to put your roots down with and grow
would you take her hand and walk with her
through the narrow gate of life
gather your load, prepare to travel the road
that’s gonna lead you from trouble and strife
if you’re
holding out for something
just reach and we’ll rise above
give me sun, give me dirt, give me water
give me sweet everlasting love

vermillion
it don’t get much worse than winter
south dakota
my pa was as drunk as a bar-room rag
i saw him one more time in the warmth of a beggars refuge
still sailing on his dirty rag
my mummas tears, tasted like sea water
she cried on my shoulder while she sleeps
then she got cold and idle as a picture
she died with the flowers in the fall
a graveyard cold, late november
my brother cody combed her hair
but cody never cried, he went riding with hells angels
at least he’s found his family there
me i left town, i took not
more than a picture
and a coat of my mum’s to keep me warm
i aint never going back to vermillion south dakota
i never could return
it don’t get much worse than winter south
dakota
my pa was as drunk as a bar-room rag

how many miles
it was way after midnight, before you crossed my mind
but i thought of you til the sun broke through and i watched that road
unwind
funny how that road, was just like the trail we made
every little twist and turn and bump left me feeling worn and frayed
how
many miles did we wander
how many nights did we drive on through
travelled the road like rolling thunder
and none of them lead to anywhere that we wanted them to
but it wasn’t always rough – there
was some smooth travelling too
and when the sun came up i was high on a mountain in the morning new
you always told me if i opened my eyes, i would see forever
maybe i did, maybe that’s how i knew that we were never destined
to be together
how many miles did we wander
how many nights did we drive on through
travelled the road like rolling thunder
and none of them lead to anywhere that we wanted them to
sometimes hurting
someone is the kindest thing that a person can do
what more can i say, i’m sorry if i caused your heart to bleed
you were always so kind and gentle and warm
and i tried so hard to be that way in return
but you never asked me what i wanted you just told me what you thought
i need
how many miles did we wander
how many nights did we drive on through
travelled the road like rolling thunder
and none of them lead to anywhere that we wanted them to

without you
i’ve been looking out for number one
i’ve been stepping out with my friends
i don’t have to justify what i have done
i don’t have to answer to anyone
i put my body on the line
take a step out of my mind
life takes on a different view
without you
i feel energized like i was young
i have not felt this way since we began
i’m gonna re-evaluate my future plan
time to free myself of your demands
there’s no need to compromise
i’ll do whatever i decide
no-one there to spoil the view
without you
i don’t care if i never touch the sun
i don’t care if the whole thing comes undone
cos every day to me is a surprise
i don’t care if it leads to my demise
no restrictions now i’m
free
no black clouds hanging over me
yes i think i like this view
without you

sad sailor song
sailing to the end of the world
my ship is grand, so tall she stands
i’ve been trying to wake the captain
ahoy land, ahoy land
he’s been up all night with the devil
been drinking up been drinking up
he’s been up all with the devil
dancin’ up a storm storm storm
the ocean she’s a dancin’ all
over us
man overboard man overboard
we got a big night up ahead of us
sad sailor song, the devils storm
sad sailor song, the devils storm
i said my prayers to my mumma
don’t cry too long, don’t cry for me
my bones lay at the bottom of the ocean
the captain and me, my ship and me
the captain and me, my ship and me
donna simpson
get me some
sitting here too long, too long
drawing lines on my face
i swear i’m gonna blow this town
gonna pack my suitcase
there’s a whole lot of living
that i haven’t done
gonna go and get me some
so where you gonna go, when you gonna go
how you gonna get there?
with your blue jeans on
and your head full of no idea
and you paint quite a silhouette
walking into the setting sun
on your way to get you some, you’re singing...
i’m free, i’m
free
when the sun shines down on me
to the ends of the earth now
tell me what you think you’re gonna find
everything you’re looking for
is somewhere in the back of your mind
and nothing’s any different
when everything is said and done
but you’re still out to get you some, singing...
i’m free, i’m
free
when the sun shines down on me
all hopes and dreams
no money no means
no permanent address
you got holes in your shoes,
holes in your pockets
and your heart in a mess
and who you gonna blame now
that everything has come undone
you had to go and get you some
you’re still singing...
i’m free, i’m free
when the sun shines down on me
josh cunningham
eternity
i love you from the deepest part of me
i love you in a way that makes me free
when everything we know has ceased to be
i’m gonna love you on into eternity
when i was a child i behaved
like a child at play
i thought like a child and i sought my childish way
spoke like a child but a child no more i’ll be
now i love you on into eternity
well my ears cannot hear and my eyes
can’t
see
my mind has not the power to conceive
everything that’s been prepared for me
now i love you on into eternity
josh cunningham
sweetest dream
in the morning light
i’m still holding on
though my dream has faded
with the morning sun
but you’re here with me
in a memory
of my sweetest dream
in the velvet clutch
of the darkest night
when my way is lost
no guiding light
how you comfort me
in my hour of need
in my sweetest dream
when you call my name
my soul responds
i touch the flame
but the flame has gone
eluding me – bitter irony
my sweetest dream
dream dream...
dream dream...

goodbye
jet plane, fast train, automobile
sometimes we fly on a wing
sometimes we roll on wheels
i gotta go, i know – how it feels
but you know it’s just part of the deal
baby there’s no
such thing as goodbye
just an interlude on a long wild ride
if you’re in my heart then you’re by my side
and baby there’s no such thing as goodbye
back road, black road,
red dirt road
highway, byway, freeway, my way
at the crossroads, where do you go?
wherever i travel, gonna lead me home
baby there’s no such thing
as goodbye
just an interlude on a long wild ride
if you’re in my heart then you’re by my side
and baby there’s no such thing as goodbye
fate, chance, circumstance,
big wheel turning around
ain’t no goodbye, never gonna let you down
faces, places lost
in time
out on that horizon line
moving too slow, gotta let go
but i never leave you behind
baby there’s no such thing as goodbye
just an interlude on a long wild ride
if you’re in my heart then you’re by my side
and baby there’s no such thing as goodbye
josh cunningham
stay
stay another hour we’ll see the sun
let’s make believe the night is only young
pretend that all the things we’ve done we’ll do
and in that magic hour, our love will start anew
stay until the day
begins to dawn
let’s make believe the night is ours alone
we’ll whisper words that no-one else will know
our love will make the minutes long and slow
stay another day, another
year
so i can whisper love and hold you near
for in the morning, time begins again
let’s make believe and we’ll make time suspend
isn’t it clear to you, now that i’m
near to you
this love in my heart is sincere for you
your spell is over me, i’ve no control you see
so stay with me until the dawn
josh cunningham
love let me down
did the only thing i knew
packed and i left town
it’s what i always do
when love lets me down
still got a twenty in my hand
after fifty for the fare
i’m gonna ride
as far south as i can
and call a friend
i know down there
when love lets me down
when love lets me down
i live my life day to day
keeps me far enough ahead
keeps my mind and my troubles far behind
that’s what i do
when love lets me down
when love lets me down
when love lets me down
when love lets me down
donna simpson
feeling sentimental
the sun is low, the air is still
silhouette of pine trees on the hill
horizon starts to glitter
bluejays are atwitter
the evening sky is setting in
the stars come out, the moon is full
it’s the kind of night you can’t sit still
you’re thinking bout your baby
wondering if maybe
she’s singing to that same white moon
feeling sentimental
it’s the easiest thing to do
could it be coincidental
are you feeling sentimental too
lovers see the world as from afar
wise men gaze to distant stars
the troubles that persist
they really don’t exist
when you’re joined together heart to heart
